TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF COMPOSITION
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify a single authoritative philosophy of composition nor to determine in advance what such a philosophy must be. A field concerned with composition must remain responsive to practices that differ in medium, history, method, aesthetic orientation, and social or institutional position. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both the singularity of artistic decisions and the structures within which those decisions become possible.
The programme therefore aims to establish conditions under which multiple philosophies of composition may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. Such philosophies may disagree about the nature of the work, the location of agency, the status of knowledge, the function of form, or the responsibilities of composition. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which composition understands itself.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible, but also to become more accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow us to hear, what they prevent us from hearing, and how compositional practice might transform the terms of its own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites composers to undertake it collectively.
